What's your favorite thing to drink when it's cold outside?
Over the last couple of weeks, I've really been enjoying an occasional Red Hook cocktail, which I first read about on the Cocktail Chronicles, and then again on gumbopages.com (which is also where I found the sazerac recipe I'm most fond of).
It's rye-based, so a perfect warming drink for a chilly fall evening. Yum!
The Red Hook Cocktail
(by Enzo Errico, Milk & Honey, New York City)2 ounces rye whiskey
1/2 ounce Punt e Mes
1/2 ounce maraschinoCombine with ice in a mixing glass and stir for at least 30 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
I'm almost finished with Lawrence Osborne's The Accidental Connoisseur, which is about wine, but more particularly, about wine people and wine stories. It's taken me almost a month to read, and although I read another book in between, I don't know why it's taking me so long--it's actually really funny in parts, but it also tends to lag a bit as he visits wine region after wine region in France.
But I love this quote:
I grew deliriously content. I began to tap my feet under the table and grin fiendishly.... Is there anything better than drinking? When the happiness of drinking overwhelms you, you cannot resist it.
What's your favorite drink or cocktail? What's in it?

A Sazerac! It's my latest cocktail obsession.
This is the recipe I use. Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon of simple syrup (I actually use 1 teaspoon of granulated sugar, because I'm too lazy to make simple syrup)
- 3 - 4 dashes Peychaud's bitters
- 2 ounces Old Overholt (rye whiskey)
- 1/4 teaspoon Herbsaint (anise liqueur)
- Strip of lemon peel
